BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!!!

On June 6, 1997 I, Mary Verdery, became a high school graduate. My dream had always been to go to college and earn my degree in communications and go on to become an active force in my work field. My parents helped me pack up everything I owned, much like many parents have been doing in the last two weeks. We loaded two cars and the bed of a pick-up truck and headed off to Anderson, SC for my first semester at Anderson College. I moved in on August 9, 1997 and met two of the most amazing "girls" ever. We were quickly left on our own as we all thought it was extremely "un-cool" to have our parents there chaperoning us (insert major laughing right here). Upon being left alone we realized we were alone and free to do and act however we pleased. I spent an entire year having the most fun I think I have ever had in my entire life! Little did I know that in May of 1998 I would be handed a very rude awakening!! My grades were not what they should have been in any way, shape, or form. I knew I was intelligent but I spent too much time simply having fun and not applying the study habits that I had formed in high school.

Flash forward to late July of 1998...

Summer school came to an end and all of the extreme effort I had put in to bringing my grades up had, in my mind at the time, been futile. My parents received a letter from the college stating that I would be placed on academic probation and I would loose what little bit of assistance I had been awarded. Because I attended a private, out-of-state college the loss of that little bit of assistance meant that I would do the exact opposite of what I had done in August of the previous year. I slowly packed up everything, loaded the cars and truck, and sobbed the entire way home. I quickly enrolled in Gainesville College and started school. I also began working at Unicoi State Park in Helen, GA. During this time I was still some what involved with the young man who was my boyfriend in Anderson although we had all but decided to stop seeing each other. I took one last trip to Anderson on a Friday evening that by all appearances was a normal evening. After dark things quickly turned worse and we all realized we were in the middle of a blizzard. My "boyfriend" at the time chose that weekend to tell me that he had enlisted in the United States Army. Needless to say we just assumed our "relationship" from that point was over. Little did we know....

July 15, 2000....

At 4:08am on July 15, 2000 I was blessed with twenty little, tiny fingers and twenty little, tiny toes. Their names were Mary Catherine and Caroline Williams. Needless to say, at the age of almost twenty-two years old, my hopes and dreams for a college degree and a fast paced career were put on hold. I traded all of that, happily at the time, because my daughters were the most amazing thing I had ever seen or done. The man who was my boyfriend that joined the army had become my husband and the army moved us to Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, in October of 2000 when my daughters were 6 months old. I guess you could say at that point I made myself completely give up the idea of going to college and finishing my degree. My son Charlie was added to our family on August 8, 2002, and in the back of my mind I had one continuous thought, "So much for finishing my degree. I'll be busy being a mother until they are 18 and I will be 40."

One last and very quick flash forward....August 2008....

While looking for a part time position to make extra money and help in my now single mother status, I came across a position at Piedmont College. For the first time in almost 10 years I actually realized I could finally entertain the notion of not only working at Piedmont College but attending school while working. I started working for Dr. Betsey Blakeslee in September of 2008 and started attending classes in the spring of 2009. I am currently in my third semester in the Mass Communications department and I am planning on graduating in December of 2012. The best advice I could give to any of our departments freshmen and sophomores.....finish what you start and take the time to realize that one decision you might kind of think about making can effect the rest of your life. I am now confident that I will finish my degree and go out to show the world my talents and the reason I have wanted a degree in communications since I was 16 years old. I also hope that by showing my children my determination they will realize how important it is that they follow the path of least resistance, so that they can finish and follow what ever their dreams may be.

So, in conclusion, I would really like to know if there are any other moms, college students, children of single moms who went back to school, and any body else who might have something to add. What would you alter in your life to attempt to have things play out the way you always thought they would?

Weekend Lessons Learned!!

This is the Lollipop Lady...she is from Clemson and has tons and tons of amazing homemade Lollipops...the girls have decided they want to use them as party favors for their birthday....holy cow I have to plan their 10th birthday party soon....time flies wayyyyyyy too fast!!

This weekend has been an amazing weekend of lessons for me. Guess the old saying "I learn something new every day" is really true!!
Lesson 1- when you plan on something NOT happening it inevitably will occur!!

Lesson 2- Loosing a very dear family friend and former mentor
, pastor, and role model makes one think deep about everything in life.

Lesson 3- Hydroplaning really really does happen and is REALLY REALLY scary!! Thank God we didn't cross on coming traffic or get stuck in the median in the rain...WHEW!!!

Lesson 4- watching your child(ren) being baptized is the most amazing thing in the world. Hearing your daughter say "Mom I feel really blessed to have been born twice....its too bad not everybody in the world can feel this way".

Lesson 5- sharing deep feelings with a sweet friend after a loss and a very hard afternoon is some times just what the Dr. ordered! thank you F.E. :)

Lesson 6- "You will never know God's love more clearly than when you forgiv
e and love your enemies. " - Corrie Ten Boom.....sometimes God will send you exactly what you need to hear in exactly the right moment...and although I already knew this I think He knows I need to re-learn this lesson sometimes!!

So, in the span of 3 days we have had tons and tons going on..the parade at th
e Mtn. Laurel festival was really fun...kinda long...but fun! I love watching my "babies" having fun...I don't have many years of that left :(. Mountain Laurel face painting is (according to my children) the most amazing thing in the world...

amazing weekends and wonderful family time are always happening and with summer just around the corner I hope to have tons and tons more!!

~First Day~

So today is the first day of my "break". I am still in the habit of getting everything done at night so that it doesn't have to sit all day for me to come home to. Note to self....if I'm going to continue doing that it is going to leave me with nothing to do during the day but sit here. Well, not really because there is always the garage that could stand a good cleaning and all the pictures that I still need to hang on the wall :).....I am hoping and praying that this break won't last too long but I know that God has a plan and I am completely willing to follow it. This was shown clearly to me last Tuesday. My former boss told me that the meeting he had that afternoon was about me and that "it wasn't good news". So I immediately knew exactly what he meant. Tuesday night my wonderful mother sent me a message and said that there was a listing in The Northeast Georgian that seemed to be perfect for me. I checked it out, then immediately began working on my resume which fell completely in to place along with an amazing cover letter! From that moment on the loss of my job with Piedmont College seemed like it might be for a reason. God is in control of my life right now and I am absolutely LOVING IT!!! God Bless all of my sweet friends, now I get to spend a little more time with you and hopefully get to know a few of you a little better :D!!!

In serious need of advice!! :)

Ok so here is my plight!! I have so much going on now days that I find it extremely hard to get everything done in the 24 hours that God has provided me with. My brain and my mouth seem to be at war with each other....this past weekend I was trying to get the kids showered and dressed and had Mary Catherine in the shower...I proceeded to give her the "run down" and ended my rant with "DO NOT STEP OFF THIS MAT (MY CHILDREN SEEM TO NOT UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF A BATH MAT) UNTIL THERE IS NOT A SINGLE DROP OF BODY ON YOUR WATER!" yep thats right, you read it right!! I have continued to jumble up my thoughts and words and now it appears that even when my poor tired brain realizes that I have done this and I go back and try to correct it I still mess the words up!! (WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS THE BEST EXAMPLE KIM) Any ideas on how to fix this little"issue" my brain appears to be having?!?! I will take any suggestions :)

Ooooooooouch!!! Night class

The pottery in this picture is Etchizen pottery, fired in a wood kiln, at insane temperatures, in Etchizen, Japan. The presentation in class last night was 2 hours of talking about how they do this and why.....fairly interesting but I must be honest...(insert slight head bob here lol)

I thought about doing this last night when I got home but apparently my brain/body had different thoughts. I awoke this morning at 3:04 am to find myself sitting up on my bed, laptop in my lap, history book by my side where it had fallen, and the TV (God bless dish network) was "asleep". After I sluggishly moved everything to one side of the bed I quickly went back to sleep and really am beginning to think I should have either stayed asleep or gotten up at that point because now all I want is a nap HAHA.

After 12 years I can finally (again) tell the world why I never liked my Western Civ class at Anderson College. No one in their right mind, in my opinion, can say that they LIKE night classes. Up until this week Mondays were the only day I had to come home and get a few things done and spend time at home. For the next 7 weeks I no longer have that luxury. I do however, have Art Appreciation otherwise known as ART 100. I dreaded this class so bad last night that by the time Sadie got to my house I was ready to just forget that I had signed up for it :). So, off I went at 5:30pm, to the art annex. I was pleased to find out that I knew 4 people in the class which made things much easier. We took our quiz, went over the answers, and I'm pretty sure I only missed one!! Needless to say I was pretty proud of myself. We then watched a presentation (insert snore and bobbing head here) then moved to the Art gallery to view some work for a show that will open on Thursday. OH JOY!! Thursday at 5:30 we get extra credit for being at the opening, hmmmmmm baseball game and art opening all within 3o minutes!! SURE not a problem LOL.

So all that complaining is to say that I decided last night that the night class might not be such a bad thing after all! Sure I have another paper added to the ones I have to write every week BUT its one less core class that I have to worry about!! This puts me down to 1 1/2 years left to go!! Maybe one day I will see the light at the end of the tunnel that all my graduating friends keep talking about!!!
